TWENTY-SIX

Rowan dropped us off at the end of the castle driveway just as the heavens opened and torrential rain soaked us to the bone. We ran down the driveway and dove into the castle, where we stripped down to our underwear and Kane made tea.

Dante’s phone rang. He glanced at the display and curled a lip before he put on a polite smile and answered.

“Say that again,” Dante said.

Kane and I looked at each other. Dante kept clenching and unclenching his hands.

“And you have no other choice?”

I raised my eyebrow at Kane who gave me a melodramatic shocked face with his hands on either side of his face. I bit my bottom lip to stop myself from laughing.

“That was my Council contact. She said the Council is corrupt and they cannot offer us any assistance with the forging of the new stone,” Dante said gravely.

Kane shrugged. “They weren’t doing much to begin with.”

“Another attack is currently under way, and the Council is going to pull their people back. A number of key members feel the veil should be torn down and the humans should be culled,” Dante said.

“Seems a bit extreme,” Kane said as he poured tea for everyone.

Gideon eyed the mugs with deep suspicion.

“You’re living in Scotland now; you’re going to learn to love tea,” Kane said with a smile.

“Can we move somewhere better?” Gideon asked.

Kane levelled a dark look at the hound, which Gideon ignored and went to the fridge to retrieve milk.

“So, what do we do now?” I asked.

“I know a good coven, and there are some good packs in the area. We can talk to them about protecting the humans,” Kane said as he handed me my mug of tea.

“I will see if can sway the local enforcers and bring in some Black Guard,” Dante said as he began thumbing through his phone.

Gideon bared his teeth.

“The Black Guard are monsters,” he snarled.

Dante didn’t even look up from his phone.

“No, they are very skilled Guardians, and your kind is prone to breaking the laws,” Dante said.

Gideon’s jaw tightened so much I worried he was going to break something.

“Do you really think your master would send them to do nice things?” Dante asked when he finally looked at Gideon.

The hound exhaled and poured a lot of milk into his tea, much to Kane’s horror.

“Kane, you know the area, are there any Guardians we can bring in? The sun god or moon goddess, perhaps?” Dante asked.

“The sun priest can’t stand my face. I’ll see if I can get hold of the moon priestess, though. Guardians are thin on the ground in these parts,” Kane said.

Guardians were chosen by the gods to act as enforcers on this plane. They worked with the priests and priestesses to fulfil the gods’ wishes and keep things moving as the gods wanted them to. Or that’s what I’d been told, anyway. I hadn’t met one that I knew of.

Kane and Dante wandered into the living room, where they started making phone calls. That left me with Gideon looking sourly at his tea-flavoured milk.
